How to use satellite images

EUMETSAT satellite images show current cloud cover above Europe. Cloud density is portrayed with light coloured imagery showing heavier cloud. The darker the imagery the lighter the cloud cover. The Infrared spectrum allows us to observe cloud movement at night. Cloud cover changes are updated hourly.

Meteosat satellite

Meteosat is a meteorological satellite run by a European organisation. The satellite has got a geostationary orbit which has been providing satellite images since 1977.

Types of satellite images

Satellite data is available in several channels. At meteocentrum, you can mostly find the Infrared spectrum satellite images that are visible night and day. The Visible spectrum imagery shows details of low altitude clouds. However, such imagery is only seen during the day.
